How to Create and Use Modifiers/Toppings

Modifiers and toppings provide reusable price adjustments and product options.
This guide covers:

Menu-container assignment is not covered.
Open Modifier Management
- Select Manage from the navigation bar.
- Select Modifiers from the management sidebar.
- The Modifier Management page opens.
The Modifiers feature must be enabled under Manage → Settings → Feature Control.
Viewing Mode: Admin Tools Off
With Admin Tools off, users can:
- Review existing modifiers
- Review existing toppings
- Expand or hide filter tabs
- Filter modifiers by type
- View reporting-category groups and item counts
- Open the Help panel
Creation, editing, deletion, and category/type management controls are hidden.
Administration Mode: Admin Tools On
Turn Admin Tools on to display:
- Add Modifier
- Add Topping
- Manage Categories
- Manage Types
- Edit controls
- Delete controls
Administrative changes are saved through their corresponding creation or editing windows.
How to Add a Modifier
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Select Add Modifier.
- Complete the Create Modifier window.
- Select Save Modifier.
Name — required
Enter the modifier’s customer- or staff-facing name.
Use a short name that clearly describes the action, such as Extra Cheese, No Onions, Substitute Side, or Half-Off.
Type
Choose the modifier’s behavioral type:
- Add-On
- Substitution
- Exclusion
- Discount
- A custom type
- + Add new type…
Types organize modifiers and provide filter tabs on the Modifier Management page.
Price Impact
Choose how the modifier affects the product price:
- + adds a fixed amount.
- − subtracts a fixed amount.
- % applies a percentage adjustment.
Select the amount field to open the numeric keypad:
- Select Clear if needed.
- Enter the amount.
- Select Done.
A modifier can use a $0.00 impact when it changes the order without changing the price.
Reporting Category
Choose a reporting category or leave -- None -- selected.
Available options include the default categories:
- Add-On
- Substitution
- Exclusion
- Discount
Custom reporting categories also appear here.
For this workflow, use one reporting category per modifier. Reporting categories determine how modifiers are grouped on the management page and can support reporting organization.
The + Add new category… option provides another route for creating a category. + Additional Reporting can display another category selector, but additional reporting configuration is outside this guide.
Save the modifier
- Review the name, type, price impact, and reporting category.
- Select Save Modifier.
- Confirm that the modifier appears under All Modifiers.
The modifier is displayed within its reporting-category group.
How to Edit a Modifier
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Find the modifier under All Modifiers.
- Select Edit.
- Update any of the following:
- Name
- Type
- Price-impact operator
- Price-impact amount
- Reporting category
- Select Save Changes in the Edit Modifier window.
Select Cancel to close the window without saving.
How to Delete a Modifier
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Find the modifier.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleting a modifier permanently removes that modifier record. Default modifier categories and types are not affected.
How to Add a Topping
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Select Add Topping.
- Complete the Add Topping window.
- Select Save.
Topping name
Enter a clear topping name, such as Extra Cheese, Bacon, Whipped Cream, or Jalapeños.
Category
Select the category used to organize the topping.
The available category list is based on the business’s configured product categories.
Price Impact
Choose how the topping affects the price:
- + adds a fixed amount.
- − subtracts a fixed amount.
- % applies a percentage adjustment.
Select the amount field, enter the value with the numeric keypad, and select Done.
Use $0.00 when the topping should not change the price.
Save the topping
- Review the topping name, category, and price impact.
- Select Save.
- Confirm that the topping appears under All Toppings.
How to Edit a Topping
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Find the topping under All Toppings.
- Select Edit.
- Update the:
- Topping name
- Category
- Price-impact operator
- Price-impact amount
- Select Save.
Select Cancel to close the window without saving.
How to Delete a Topping
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Find the topping.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleting a topping permanently removes that topping record.
How to Manage Reporting Categories
Reporting categories organize modifier records into labeled groups.
Create a reporting category
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Select Manage Categories.
- Review the existing categories.
- Enter a name in Category name.
- Select Add.
The new category becomes available in modifier creation and editing forms.
Default reporting categories
CrumbsOS includes these default categories:
- Add-On
- Substitution
- Exclusion
- Discount
Default categories are labeled Default and do not display a deletion control.
Delete a custom reporting category
- Open Manage Categories.
- Find the custom category.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
Delete or update modifiers that use the category before removing it.
Select Back to close category management.
How to Manage Modifier Types
Types describe a modifier’s functional role and create filtering options.
Create a modifier type
- Turn Admin Tools on.
- Select Manage Types.
- Enter a name in Type name.
- Select Add.
The type becomes available in modifier creation and editing forms.
The + Add new type… option in the modifier form provides another route to type creation.
Default modifier types
CrumbsOS includes:
- Add-On
- Substitution
- Exclusion
- Discount
Default types are labeled Default and cannot be deleted from the type-management window.
Delete a custom type
- Open Manage Types.
- Find the custom type.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
Update or delete modifiers using the custom type before removing it.
Select Back to close type management.
Filter and Review Modifiers
Select Show Categories above All Modifiers to display the type filters.
Available filters can include:
- All
- Each active modifier type
- Other
Select a type to display only modifiers using that type.
Select Hide to collapse the filter tabs.
Modifiers are also grouped under their reporting-category names. Each group displays its number of modifiers.
